The T20 tank container is a standardized 20-foot ISO tank container of IMO-1 category, designed for multimodal transport of dangerous liquid cargoes under working pressure up to 6.67 bar, including toxic, corrosive and chemically active substances.
The T20 tank container is used in the chemical and petrochemical industry, at large industrial and logistics hubs, and is also used for the safe transshipment of dangerous liquid cargoes between sea, road and rail transport.
Technical characteristics of the T20 tank container
Structurally, the T20 tank container consists of an 8 mm thick stainless steel tank mounted in a reinforced steel ISO frame the size of a standard 20 ft dry container. The ISO tank T20 is equipped with a ladder, a service platform and a top manhole.
Overpressure is relieved through safety valves. Optionally, the tank can be sheathed with thermal insulation and equipped with an electric or steam heating system to maintain the required characteristics of the transported product.
Table. Technical characteristics of the T20 container
| Container characteristics | Type ISO Tank container T20 (IMO-1) |
|---|---|
| External dimensions | |
| Length, mm | 6,058 |
| Width, mm | 2,438 |
| Height, mm | 2,591 |
| Specifications | |
| Usable volume, l | 14,500-21,000 |
| Tare weight, kg | 3,980 |
| Maximum gross weight, kg | 36,000 |
| Maximum payload, kg | 32,020 |
Loading and unloading are carried out using a closed system to minimize the risks of leaks or contact of the transported substances with air. Depending on the design, loading can be done through a 500 mm diameter top manhole or a 3-inch bottom valve, and unloading — by pressure through the discharge system.
The loading and unloading process is carried out strictly according to regulations depending on the hazard class of the liquid cargo. For certain categories of dangerous goods, special safety measures may be applied, such as the use of an inert gas environment (nitrogen blanket). Bitumen and resins in some cases require heating before unloading.
T20 tank container: advantages

The T20 tank container is widely used for international logistics of dangerous liquid cargoes due to the following advantages:
- resistance of the tank material to chemical substances;
- tightness of the design, which ensures safety during long-term storage and transportation;
- possibility of multimodal logistics without the need to transship the cargo;
- high cost-effectiveness with constant use and minimization of cargo loss risks;
- ease of maintenance (the tank is easy to clean from residues of the transported product);
- long service life subject to maintenance regulations.
T20 containers allow the transport of certain types of acids, alkalis, reagents, toxic liquids and other dangerous chemical products of classes 3, 6.1, 8 and 9 according to the UN classification.
If the need for equipment is temporary, for example for seasonal or project tasks, an economically advantageous solution may be renting a tank container.
