Tank container T50 is a standardized ISO tank container of IMO-5 class, used for safe intermodal (multimodal) transportation of liquefied and compressed gases under high working pressure (up to 34.5 bar, depending on the design and requirements of the product being transported).
The T50 tank container is used in international and domestic logistics, petrochemical and gas industries, as well as at enterprises handling industrial gases that require strict safety regulations during transportation and storage.
Technical specifications of T50 tank containers
Structurally, the T50 tank container consists of a thick-walled tank made of durable P460NL1 carbon steel, mounted in a reinforced 20-foot ISO frame. The frame consists of two end frames made of structural steel, connected by four longitudinal beams, which securely fix and protect the tank during transportation and transshipment.
The T50 tank is equipped with a 500 mm diameter top manhole for inspection and maintenance of the container, pressure relief valves, and instrumentation (including a pressure gauge). Depending on the purpose and type of gas being transported, thermal insulation and heating systems can be installed.
Table. Technical specifications of the T50 container
| Container specifications | ISO Tank container T50 (IMO-5) type |
|---|---|
| External dimensions | |
| Length, mm | 6,058 |
| Width, mm | 2,438 |
| Height, mm | 2,591 |
| Characteristics | |
| Usable volume, L | 24,300-24,600 |
| Tare weight, kg | 7,480-8,820 |
| Maximum gross weight, kg | 36,000 |
| Maximum payload, kg | 27,180-28,520 |
Loading and unloading operations for liquefied gases are performed using pumping and compressor equipment. Depending on the operating scheme, the product can be pumped through bottom or top connections (in accordance with the design of the specific container and product requirements). The gas vapors are displaced and removed through the vapor (top) line back into the supplier's tank or into a pressure balancing loop. Discharge is accomplished by creating excess pressure using a compressor.
T50 tank container: advantages

The use of T50 tank containers in logistics chains where safety and integrity of the transported product are critical is driven by a number of advantages:
- tightness and safety — withstand high pressure, reduce risks of leakage and fire;
- multimodality — can be transferred from one mode of transport to another without the need for cargo transshipment;
- cost efficiency — ability to load and deliver compatible cargoes on the return journey;
- cargo integrity — thermal insulation and heating ensure the delivery of temperature-sensitive products.
T50 tanks can transport propane, butane, propylene, anhydrous ammonia, chlorine, ethylene oxide, vinyl chloride, refrigerants, and other industrial gases belonging to different hazard classes (depending on the specific container certification and ADR/IMO requirements).
For seasonal or irregular operations, it is more economically feasible to rent a T50 tank container, which will reduce costs.
