40-foot container — is a reusable container designed for domestic and international transportation of goods by sea, rail, and road.
The dry 40-foot container is intended for transporting less-than-container-load (LCL) and bulky cargo, including construction materials, consumer goods, electronics, industrial equipment, spare parts, furniture, home goods, cars, motorcycles, etc.
In addition to logistics, the 40-foot shipping container is used as a storage module for products that do not require temperature control, as well as a foundation for temporary and permanent structures: utility rooms, retail pavilions, modular residential buildings, cottages, and summer houses.
Technical specifications of the 40-foot container
There are two main types of 40-foot containers: Standard 40' DV (DRY VAN) and the high-cube 40' HC (High Cube).

The 40-foot shipping container consists of a frame reinforced with longitudinal and transverse beams, made of CORTEN alloy steel with an anti-corrosion coating. The frame connects the following elements:
- floor with moisture-resistant plywood decking 28–30 mm thick on a metal base;
- walls made of metal sheets with a profile depth of 30-35 mm;
- roof made of 2 mm thick profiled steel.
The 40-foot container is equipped with doors on one end. The doors are mounted on reinforced hinges and fitted with a locking system.
The dry container is not intended for transporting or storing products that require temperature control. For such tasks, a 40-foot refrigerated container is used, which can maintain temperatures ranging from −60 to +30 °C (depending on the equipment model).
40-foot shipping container: advantages
Due to its large dimensions, the 40-foot container allows industrial-scale transportation of heavy and oversized cargo.

Other advantages of 40-foot containers:
- Safety — the robust welded sealed construction protects cargo from moisture, and a reliable locking system minimizes the risk of break-in or accidental door opening during transit.
- Versatility — can be used as a container for grain and other bulk, piece, or palletized goods. It can also be repurposed into a warehouse, technical, residential, or office space.
- Convenience — standardized dimensions allow containers to be transported by different modes of transport and stacked. Swing doors provide easy loading even for oversized cargo.
The 40-foot container design complies with the international ISO standard (International Organization for Standardization) and is suitable for multimodal transport without reloading the contents.
