Hard Top Containers
The Hard Top container (or Hard Open Top) is a type of specialized cargo container equipped with a removable rigid metal roof secured with bolted connections. The open-top design is convenient for crane loading of oversized and heavy cargo through the roof.
The top-loading Hard Open Top container is used in domestic and international logistics for transporting industrial equipment, construction machinery, metal structures, generators, pipes, machine tools, and other cargo that is difficult or impossible to load through standard doors.
Hard Open Top shipping container: technical specifications
Top-loading containers are available in Standard and High Cube (HC) modifications in two sizes, which correspond to the dimensions of standard dry 40-foot and 20-foot containers. Some parameters may vary depending on the manufacturer of the special container.

The main design difference of the Hard Top container is the presence of a rigid roof, which is attached to the frame with bolts or locking mechanisms and can be removed with a crane when necessary.
Due to the absence of a fixed roof, the upper part of the frame is additionally reinforced around the perimeter with beams and corner posts to provide the necessary structural rigidity. Swing doors are provided across the entire width of the end, and a removable transverse beam is placed above the doorway to facilitate top loading of long-length and oversized cargo.
Hard Open Top containers comply with international ISO standards and are suitable for transport by sea, rail, and road.
Hard Top container: advantages
The container with a removable roof is in demand for transporting oversized cargo that requires a combination of top loading and reliable protection from external influences.
Key advantages of Hard Open Top containers:
- possibility of vertical loading of equipment and heavy construction materials using a crane or manipulator;
- high level of cargo protection from precipitation and external impacts during transportation due to the steel roof and high-quality rubber seals;
- versatility of use (with the roof installed, the special container can be used as a standard container unit);
- convenient loading and unloading of long-length cargo thanks to the removable top beam above the doorway.
Special Hard Open Top containers are in demand in the construction industry, manufacturing, energy, oil and gas sector, mechanical engineering, and project logistics. For transporting dry bulk and granulated cargo, an alternative to the Hard Top container is the Bulk container.
