Replacement of refrigerant in a refrigerated container
For the stable operation of a refrigerated container, the presence of the correct and high-quality refrigerant is critically important. In case of leakage, contamination, or loss of properties, the cooling efficiency decreases, and the risk of compressor failure and damage to other system components increases.
GCS provides professional refrigerant recharge services for equipment from leading reefer container manufacturers: Carrier, Thermo King, Daikin, Starcool.
Submit an applicationWe perform reefer container refills throughout Ukraine — in Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and other cities. We use only certified refrigerants R-134a and R-404a and strictly adhere to technological requirements.
When is a refrigerant refill needed for a cooling unit?

There are several signs indicating that a refrigerated container requires a refill:
- the container cannot maintain the set temperature;
- visible or confirmed refrigerant leakage;
- increased noise level during operation;
- significant increase in energy consumption;
- reduced cooling speed.
If you notice these signs, do not delay contacting specialists. Attempting to refill the system yourself may lead to equipment damage and increase future repair costs.
How refrigerant replacement is performed: step-by-step process
Refrigerant replacement in refrigerated containers is a multi-stage procedure requiring a professional approach, precision, and strict adherence to standards. GCS specialists work with two main types of refrigerants — R-134a and R-404A — and perform refilling in accordance with manufacturers’ technological recommendations. The main focus is proper system preparation, complete removal of moisture and air, and accurate control of the refrigerant amount. All work is performed using specialized equipment and is strictly regulated.
1. System preparation — evacuation and dehydration
Before refilling the cooling unit with refrigerant, we perform a complete system evacuation. The goal is to remove air and moisture to prevent corrosion and internal component degradation.
Main preparation stages:
- Connecting a vacuum pump, vacuum gauge, and manifold gauge set.
- Creating a deep vacuum down to 500 microns (0.67 mBar).
- Holding the vacuum for 5–10 minutes to rule out leaks.
- Optional nitrogen purging to prevent ice formation under high humidity.
- Repeated evacuation after purging.
This thorough preparation eliminates the risk of acid formation in the system, prolongs equipment lifespan, and ensures stable operation of the unit.

2. Refrigerant charging: R-134a and R-404A
After successful preparation, the main phase begins — the refrigerant refill. The method depends on the type of refrigerant used in the system.
- R-134a (two-stage filling). Vapor charging through the suction line to about 2 bar (boiling temperature 0 °C) prevents freezing of residual moisture. Then the process switches to liquid charging through the liquid line until reaching the required amount. Constant weight monitoring is required based on the unit’s technical specifications.
- R-404A (liquid charging only). Filling is done in the liquid phase through the liquid port strictly with the unit turned off. Weight-based control prevents component separation since R-404A is a zeotropic mixture.
These actions ensure even cooling and stable operation of the refrigerated container under all conditions.
3. Final inspection and startup
After the refill, the system is turned on and undergoes a full inspection:
- Leak diagnostics of all components (compressor, welds, condenser, capillary tube).
- Checking the evaporator and suction line operation.
- Adjusting the refrigerant level if necessary.
- Running the system and sealing the service tube.
Only after these steps is the system considered fully ready for operation. This sequence minimizes failure risks and extends the service life of the cooling unit.
Refrigerant replacement in refrigerated containers must be performed exclusively by a qualified specialist. Attempting self-service without equipment can cause serious damage. Contact GCS to receive guaranteed results in full compliance with all standards.
