How to correctly choose a 45-foot refrigerated container
There are many factors to consider when purchasing a 45-foot refrigerated container:
First of all, it should be noted that most containers used by shipping companies have scratches, rust, minor patches, and dents. This occurs due to sea transportation, loading/unloading at ports and on the vessel. These defects are not critical.
However, if the container's outer shell is peeling and air pockets form between the polyurethane insulation and/or poor-quality repairs are made without following IICL / CARGO WORTHY standards.
Below is a list of criteria affecting the choice of a 45-foot refrigerated container. We recommend paying attention to the following:
Structure
- Doors — should open/close easily, tightly, and without effort; rubber seals should be intact and in place, fit tightly, with no cracks or visible deformations.
- Floor — should be rigid, not sagging, not loose, and free of rotted thresholds.
- Ceiling — without sagging, holes, or leaks at points of contact with side walls.
- Walls — rigid, without insulation peeling; when tapped, the sound should be dull. Peeling allows moisture to enter, reducing thermal insulation properties and increasing energy consumption.
- Roof — intact, without punctures. If there are patches, check the quality of repairs.
- Structural beams — may show signs of repair; carefully inspect the quality of work performed.
Refrigeration unit
- Presence/absence of oil leaks in the refrigeration circuit; leaks indicate freon leakage.
- Condenser — rigid, without flaking.
- Control cabinet — fully equipped with electronics.
- Compressor — often rusty from sea salt, which does not affect operation. Pay attention to noise and unusual sounds for detailed inspection.
When checking the container while it is on, there should be no errors on the display; any errors indicate malfunctions.
Door plate — mandatory; it is the container passport containing manufacturer, year of manufacture, identification number, etc. The plate must be original and comply with ISO standards.
Always check that all documents required by the seller are available. Besides transaction documents (contract, invoice, etc.), the most important is the Cargo Customs Declaration (CCD). Having this document protects against fines and confiscation of illegally imported containers. Usually, the document must have a wet stamp and data that exactly match the container (number on all walls, plate, and doors).
