Main stages of container transportation
To understand the role of customs procedures, it is important to know the main stages of container transportation.
-
Placing an order. Everything begins with placing an order for a specific cargo and clarifying technical and financial details.
-
Searching for and selecting a carrier. At this stage, a company is chosen to perform the transportation. Depending on the task, these may be companies that rent or own shipping containers of various sizes and modifications.
-
Receiving documents for shipment. Once the order is placed, the supplier receives a letter of credit and issues an invoice to the importer.
-
Export organization. A freight forwarder or foreign partner organizes the export. To do this, all main documents are prepared in advance. These include a packing list, certificate of origin, manufacturer’s instruction letter, and manufacturer’s declaration letter.
-
Transportation of goods through ports to the buyer. At this stage, the goods are transported and go through all customs procedures.
Customs clearance: what you need to know
To carry out export and import operations, any company must obtain accreditation at customs. The registry includes all companies authorized to conduct foreign economic activity. Each company listed in the registry receives a registration number.
How does customs clearance of goods work?
During export and import operations, customs clearance occurs in several stages:
-
submission of a customs declaration followed by verification of its contents;
-
verification of cargo value with control of the calculated customs duties;
-
settlement of related non-tariff issues;
-
inspection of the cargo by customs officers.
Companies engaged in foreign economic activity must also prepare and submit documents for customs clearance.
Customs-related tasks are important and labor-intensive. That is why companies usually assign a dedicated specialist to handle them, while completely different employees are responsible for questions such as purchasing or leasing a shipping container.
